Venus retrograde, just like any other retrograde, has a reputation. Look it up and you'll find a list of warnings telling you not to buy anything, change your hair, start a relationship or sign anything.
Venus retrograde comes around about once every 18 months, and it's a stretch of time that invites us to slow down and look at what's already in front of us, especially our relationships, our money, what we value, and how we let ourselves be loved. This period of time tends to surface things from the past that are asking for some more attention.
What is Venus Retrograde?
Venus retrograde is when Venus appears to move backward through the zodiac from where we stand on Earth. That backward motion is an optical effect of two planets moving at different speeds around the sun, the same way a car you're passing on the highway seems to slide backward.
It happens about every 18 months and lasts around six weeks, which makes it much rarer than Mercury retrograde, which comes around three times a year. There's also a shadow period a few weeks before and after, when Venus moves over the same stretch of sky it's about to cover (or just covered), so one full Venus retrograde cycle runs about four months. When you pay attention, you'll notice the themes usually start to stir in the first shadow, peak during the retrograde itself, and settle in the second shadow.
How the retrograde shows up in our lives
Venus rules the things we value and the ways we connect, including our relationships and the give-and-take inside them, money and what it means to us, self-worth and how we let others value us, beauty and image, and art, design and pleasure.
When Venus is retrograde, these areas tend to come up for review. An old relationship pattern shows up again, sometimes with a new person. You have second thoughts about a purchase, a style or a design choice. Money feelings seem bigger than the numbers involved. People from your past reach out or come to mind. All of this is the review part of the cycle, and the information that becomes available to you through these experiences will be important later.
October - November 2026: Venus Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra
This Venus retrograde began on October 3, 2026 in Scorpio, moved back into Libra on October 25, and will station direct on November 13 in Libra. The shadow period runs from August 31 to December 15, 2026.
Phase | Date |
|---|---|
Shadow begins | August 31, 2026 |
Venus stations retrograde (8° Scorpio) | October 3, 2026 |
Venus moves back into Libra | October 25, 2026 |
Venus stations direct (22° Libra) | November 13, 2026 |
Shadow ends | December 15, 2026 |
Libra is the sign of partnership, fairness and balance, and it's one of the two signs Venus rules, so this retrograde put reciprocity, approval and the question of being valued right in the foreground. You might notice yourself asking whether an exchange is fair, whether you're giving more than you're getting, whether the people around you actually see what you bring to the table and appreciate you for it, and whether you're saying what you really think or what you know will keep the peace.

Three ways Venus retrograde in Libra might be showing up for you
Regardless of the houses or planets this retrograde is activating in your chart, if you're thoughtful, perceptive and used to reading everyone else's needs first, this retrograde is likely showing up for you in one of three ways.
*Note: Mercury is also in retrograde at this time, so these themes are likely influenced by both of these planets.
Hiding Your Truth. You know what you want to say, but getting it out is the hard part. You're rehearsing conversations in your head (more than usual), second-guessing your wording, and realizing that staying quiet feels easier than risking being misunderstood. In relationships and at work, you may be reading everyone else's needs so well that what you actually value isn't even making it into the conversation.
Approval Negotiation. You're adjusting how you communicate to keep the peace, consciously or unconsciously. You're softening opinions, over-explaining your decisions, and worrying about how your words will be received. You may know that something in a relationship or a work exchange isn't fair, but calling it out feels like it might damage the connection, so you stay silent.
An Invisible Voice. Your inner world is far richer than the version of you most people get to see. You may have written something brilliant and scrapped it because you weren't sure your audience would accept it. Or you might be trying to own your worth, and freezing up when it comes to putting a price tag on what you offer the world.
If any of these are resonating with you, there's a pattern at play, and once you bring your attention to it, its grip on you will start to loosen.
What this retrograde has looked like for me
Retrogrades are a good time for anything that starts with "re," like reviewing, revisiting, reconsidering, reconnecting and repairing. This one gave me plenty of all of them.
My fiancé and I started looking at wedding venues, and the prices were a shock. Knowing this wasn't the time to commit let me look without getting emotionally attached to any of them yet, and let go of the pressure to make a decision.
I was hunting for an outfit for a big presentation at work, and I made almost as many returns as purchases. The only pieces I kept were from brands I'd bought from before, which is such a classic retrograde theme, since retrogrades tend to send us back to things we’ve loved in the past.
I caught myself about to invest in a really nice fall/winter jacket and another bulk wholesale purchase for the shop and forced myself to close the tabs, because Venus retrograde is traditionally a poor time to buy things you want to last. The work outfits were different, because they were small, easy to return, and easy to undo. The traditional guidance for saying yes during a Venus retrograde follows the same logic, which is that low-stakes, easily reversible, or flexible decisions are generally fine, and so is something your intuition keeps coming back to after you've slept on it. Big, lasting commitments can usually wait until Venus is direct.
The Venus Retrograde Collection
I’ve found recently, that oftentimes we don’t need more information — we simply need a way to stay present in our experience, pay attention to what’s happening around us, and trust in what we already know. To help you do that, I pulled together a small collection curated for Venus retrograde that contains pieces for slowing down, rituals for taking care of yourself, and small, easy-yes objects. Many are one of a kind or come in very small quantities, so what you see is what there is.
Collection is open until December 1st
